Mac OS X 10.8 on a Series 5 550 Chromebook.

Big ass disclaimer I am NOT responsible if anything goes wrong Nor Do i Provide any files needed for this.Use the Big G.

First off this is only for the samsung Series 5 550 Chromebook, this will not work on any other Chromebook so please do not even attempt this, Also take note this is ONE GIANT HACK expect things NOT to work/ Second I mostly run ChromeOS on my 550 so this is more of an experiment I probably wont be supporting this as it's not really a replacement i'm looking for, so its more of a community project. So its main purpose is with coreboot and how it handles Modern ACPI functions and stability. So with that enjoy..

What Works out of box:
  • USB
  • SD Card reader
  • Video (Partial-...Full resolution but no Hardware acceleration)
  • Wifi (Atheros, OS X recognizes it but doesn’t detect any networks May need IONetworking modified)
  • Webcam
What doesn’t work ( Either no support or needs patching )
  • Sound (not tested)
  • Trackpad (no support as of yet)
  • Keyboard (no support as of yet)
  • Hardware Acceleration (video)
  • Sleep (not tested)
  • WiFi ( Needs Atheros kext edits )

Step 1:
Put your Chromebook and developer mode, if you don't know how to do this then you shouldn't even be attempting to install OSX. first go here, www.chromium.org/chromium-os/poking-around-your-chrome-os-device .

Step 2:
Once you have your Chromebook and developer mode head on over to www.JohnLewis.ie and download the prebuilt coreboot ROM for the Samsung series 5 550 chromebook. Download the latest one and make sure the md5 matches up.

Step 3:
Go here, http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/developer-information-for-chrome-os-devices/samsung-sandy-bridge . On this page its going to show you where the BIOS jumper is and where you need to short it out to gain write access to the flash ROM. ( I use a little bit of solder to join the two pins together that way I didn't have to worry about the pins coming loose, but you can also insert a small watch screwdriver and keep it there just to make sure that the Pins touch while flashing the ROM ).

Step 4:
Once you have the PINs shorted go ahead and open up a terminal window by pressing ctrl alt plus T , then type in "shell" and after that the shell prompt should appear.
Go ahead and type "sudo -s" it should now say "localhost$" . navigate to to your downloads folder by typing "CD /home/user/*/Downloads" now inside your download folder should be the coreboot ROM you downloaded earlier, go ahead and type "sudo flashrom -r bios.bin" this is going to make a backup of your current bios just in case things go wrong. Save the backup somewhere safe. After that go ahead and type "sudo flashrom -w <name of coreboot file>, after flashing it it's going to most likely give you an error and advise you not to power of the machine or to reboot it, this is normal and has happened to me and has worked for me so don't worry ( unless your chromebook doesn't boot after ).
After you reboot your Chromebook you should be greeted by a black screen that says seaBIOS if this is the case then you have successfully flashed John Lewis's Coreboot ROM onto your chromebook. if not then read this http://johnlewis.ie/unbricking-a-samsung-series-5-550-chromebook/

Step 5: Build Mac OS X Boot USB. (this has to be done on a Mac). You will need a USB keyboard and mouse with a USB hub probably( Unless you have a keyboard/Mouse combo. I use 10.8 mountain lion (use mavericks at your own discretion).
For this you can follow the guide
http://www.tonymacx86.com/61-unibeast-install-os-x-mountain-lion-any-supported-intel-based-pc.html
( forget about the last section that's has to do with multibeast ).

Once you have the installer ready proceed to boot up USB and select the following kernel flags in order to reach the installer" -v -x"

Install OSX……...

Now in order for you to boot off of a fresh install you're going to need the USB installer in order to boot up because as of right now you do not have any bootloader present on the hard drive. Now in order to properly boot up you are going to have to enter the kernel flags "-v -x" go through to setup screen and once you're done you should automatically boot up into the desktop.

Step 6: Post installation

The first thing you're going to need to do if navigate to the “system/library/extension” folder and delete the following Kext’s ( Everything that has to do with the AppleintelHD3000.kext and anything similar ) Also delete the AppleHDA.kext. afterwards repair permissions for S/L/E and /extra This should allow you to boot up into regular mode with no kernel panics. after that run the chameleon bootloader and install but dont let it reboot. Go ahead and open the USb installer and copy the “boot” and “Extra” and place it in the root of your Mac HD. Now open up the “Extra” folder and locate “org.chameleon.boot.plist and add under the “string” section of kernel flags “ -v “ . you should now be booting into OS X without safe mode. Now go ahead and install the 10.8.5 combo update and reboot.
after rebooting your going to have to boot back into "safemode" and delete the same "AppleintelHD300" kext along with the Apple HDA kext while also repairing permissions to boot back in normally. As of now i’m still trying out different Kexts to make most of the hardware work so you will need things like Voodoo  Battery manager, Sound Kexts and many more but other that that ………..That’s it…..enjoy a Hacked ChroMacbook.

Quick and easy Hard drive upgrade for the Samsung series 5 550 Chromebook.

Here's a quick guide on how to upgrade the SSD from 16GB to whatever you want.
Please make note that not all 1.8" MSATA SSD work only a few work without any modification to the BIOS. But here are some things you'll need,

1.Chromebook =/
2. Pudgy tool ( very cheap on ebay if not credit card will do. )
3.Small Philips ( star ) screwdriver
4.Replacement SSD
5. Patience

First hit the battery disconnect ( it's the photo of me poking a black pin into ). Then just follow the pictures and you should be fine. Be careful and enjoy ! ( Last picture is of me tightening up the LCD hinge )
